Extra Moto GP traffic prompts reminder to take special care

The Transport Accident Commission is reminding drivers and riders to take special care heading to the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix at Phillip Island next weekend.

Thousands of riders involved in the Cranbourne GP Run and the Barry Sheene Tribute ride, along with riders from across Australia, will fill the Princes, Strzelecki and Bass highways en route to the Moto GP.

With the extra traffic on the roads, drivers and motorcyclists have a shared responsibility to be extra vigilant.

TAC Senior Manager of Road Safety Samantha Cockfield said drivers could help ensure motorcyclists’ safety in a number of ways.

“When turning or changing lanes, use your indicators well in advance, check your mirrors and carefully check your blind spots are clear,” Ms Cockfield said.

“Giving motorcyclists enough room to move is important. Also, don’t under-estimate the value of making eye contact or acknowledging riders so they know they’ve been seen -- this simple action can help drivers and riders communicate their intentions on the road.”

The TAC is giving riders the chance to hear directly from motorcycling giants Wayne Gardner and Mick Doohan – together with former World Superbike Champion Troy Bayliss and Moto3 rider Remy Gardner - in special 'Legends on Two Wheels' sessions at the MotoGP.

The four will provide their insight into how crucial road safety is for all riders, offering fans an opportunity to hear insider tips from legends of the sport on how to prepare for the perfect ride.

Ms Cockfield said the legends would speak at the TAC’s Spokes Lounge at Moto GP, open to all fans throughout the weekend.

“Wayne, Mick, Troy and Remy will have stories to share about their time on the world stage, and will discuss the importance of protective gear and the fact that we all share a mutual responsibility to be safe every time we take to the roads.”

Riders will also have a chance to win protective clothing at the TAC’s Spokes stand at the GP Expo. The TAC will co-ordinate shuttle buses between the GP track and nearby townships, as well as a helmet storage facility for riders.
