Bike maintenance and checks

Maintenance isn’t just about ticking boxes. It’s about knowing your machine, inside and out – how it feels, how it sounds, how it moves. A well looked after bike keeps you safer, rides smoother, and gives you confidence every time you jump on.

Make regular checks - either yourself or by a mechanic - part of your riding ritual. YouTube is packed with how-to videos from riders who’ve been there. And the basics? We’ve laid them out below.

At home maintenance: the essentials

  • Tyres and wheels

Make sure your tyres have at least 2mm of tread across the surface – that’s the legal minimum, but more tread means better grip. Check tyre pressure regularly (you’ll find the correct numbers on the placard or in your manual). While you’re there, give your wheels a once over for cracked spokes, odd noises or wobble. Clean tyres are safer tyres, so give them a wash every now and then.

  • Brakes

With the bike parked, squeeze each brake and gently push the bike. If the brake works, it should stop movement instantly. If not, it’s time to sort it.

  • Controls

Check that the throttle, clutch, and brake levers all move smoothly. Find the right friction point on the clutch and adjust if needed. Look over your cables for kinks and frays and lube both ends.

  • Chain and sprockets

If your bike runs a chain, keep it properly tensioned and lubed. The owner’s manual will tell you how. Check the sprockets too, if the teeth look worn or sharp, it’s time to replace them.

  • Suspension and shocks

You’ll feel this one when you ride. If the bike feels bouncy over bumps or you hear clunky sounds from the front or rear, the shock absorbers might need attention. Don’t ignore it.

Pre-ride checks: your quick ritual

  • Brakes, clutch, throttle

Test both brakes and brake lights. Make sure the throttle and clutch feel smooth. Check for damaged or tight cables.

  • Lights, horn, mirrors

Make sure every light and indicator works. Give them a wipe. Check the horn and adjust your mirrors before you ride.

  • Chain, oil, fuel

Check your chain’s tension and lube it regularly. Check your oil before the warning light ever gets a chance. Top up your fuel if it’s low.

  • Tyres

Check pressure when tyres are cold. Look over the tread for wear, flat spots or damage.

  • Fit check

Once you’re on the bike, make sure levers and mirrors are adjusted before you set off.

  • Unfamiliar bikes

Every bike feels different. Before you set off, test the brakes, adjust controls and get a feel for the riding position.
