Learner permit restrictions
While holding a motorcycle learner permit in Victoria, you must:
- Always ride with your headlight on.
- Wear an approved high-visibility vest or jacket.
- Display an 'L' plate on the rear of your motorcycle, visible from at least 20 metres.
- Carry your learner permit or a digital version every time you ride.
- Ride only LAMS-approved motorcycles.
- Not carry passengers (pillion riders).
- Not filter between lanes of traffic.
- Maintain a zero blood alcohol concentration (BAC).
- Wear an approved protective helmet at all times.
- Not use a mobile phone or other device whilst riding.
If you passed your learner permit test on an automatic or semi-automatic motorcycle, you are restricted to riding automatic motorcycles only. To remove this restriction, you must pass the test on a manual motorcycle.
