Laws You Might've Missed

Even if you’ve been riding for years, it’s worth taking a moment to check in on the basics. Systems and processes may have changed.

Here’s a straightforward guide to help you stay sharp on your licence conditions, registration obligations and road rules in Victoria.

  • Registration and fees

Getting your bike registered is more than a formality, it’s your ticket to being road legal. Registration fees vary depending on the type and size of your bike, and whether it’s used for standard road use or something more specific. The registration costs include Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurance, which covers injury to others in the event of a crash.

If you’re registering partway through the year, expect pro-rata charges. VicRoads has a breakdown of fees based on engine capacity and bike use, so it’s worth checking the current rates.

Visit VicRoads to find registration information and fees.

  • How to register your bike

If you’re registering a motorbike, new or second-hand, you’ll need to have a few things ready. Bring proof of identity, proof of ownership, and your current licence.

From there, you can head to a VicRoads Customer Service Centre or complete the process online, depending on your situation. Once you’ve paid the relevant fees, you’ll receive your registration certificate and plates. It’s a straightforward process, but missing a step could delay you getting on the road.

  • Road rules to remember

Even for experienced riders, it’s important to brush up on the most recent road rules. We have put together some key reminders to have in the back of your mind before your next ride.

    • Lane filtering is allowed up to 30-km/h in clear traffic (only for full license riders). But watch for hazards and only filter when safe.
    • One‑metre passing of a cyclist in speed zones up to 60-km/h, 1.5 m in speed zones over 60 km/h. Give cyclists the space to ride safe.
    • No mobile phone use, full stop. Keep both hands on the bars.
    • Helmets must be approved (AS/NZS 1698 or newer) and strapped on until parked.

Visit Transport Victoria for more information on rules.

  • Licence and permit restrictions for Learners
